WINS THE DEPARTMENT OF HOUSING AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT’S (HUD) “BEST OF THE
BEST” PRACTICES AWARD 2000 FOR AFTER SCHOOL TECHNOLOGY TRAINING
PROGRAM NEW YORK CITY, November 8, 2000 - Futurekids
NYC has been recognized by the Department of Housing and Urban Development
as one of the nation’s 100 Best Practices Performers for its outstanding
after school computer technology training program at the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA). This program teaches children ages 9 to 12 how to use computer hardware and software.
Under this program,
Futurekids NYC, in collaboration with the NYCHA, the Department of
Information Technology and Telecommunications (DoITT), and the Mayor’s
Office has trained 1,000 low-income youth in over 25 Community Centers
within the five boroughs of New York City. Another 1,000 low-income youth
will be trained under this program from September 2000 to February
2001.
HUD’s criteria for selection of the top 100 Best Practices
award included demonstration of a positive impact on those served; a clear
methodology, tool, program project or model; and creativity in addressing
the problem. These quality programs are designed to provide a wide array
of benefits to children, their families, schools and the whole community.
They have a primary focus on improving the quality of life for children
and increasing their potential for self-development while opening up
future career opportunities.
“Students today are faced with a
competitive and demanding future. If they aren’t prepared, their chances
of success are greatly reduced,” explains Futurekids NYC President,
Stephane Ifrah. “The goal is to provide students with the technology
essentials that are so critical for their academic and professional
careers, and to bridge the digital divide,” Ifrah
adds. About Futurekids
