Technology training is fast becoming an integral part of every school’s curriculum. In fact, many states have or are beginning to set new standards for graduating high school students…requiring them to be computer literate. And educators are now faced with the challenge of finding effective ways to infuse technology into academic curriculum. |
Module One: Desktop Publishing (7 lessons) |
Desktop publishing and operating environment skills are applied to create an eight page magazine focusing on computers. Projects include a contents page, a cover, a feature article about the computer of the future, a troubleshooting advice column and product review articles. |
Module Two: Databases (7 lessons) |
Database technology and analytical research skills are employed to investigate the claims of a new fitness program. Information is inserted, deleted, organized and formatted in an existing database. Additionally, a new evidence database is created, sorted and filtered to locate specific data, and reports are generated based on the findings. Exposure to online and static databases is provided through exploration of the Internet and a multimedia encyclopedia. Finally, a desktop publishing program is used to generate an article detailing the findings. |
Module Three: Wordprocessing (7 lessons) |
A variety of wordprocessing skills, including setting tabs and margins, creating tables, applying bullets to a list, inserting headers and footers, changing the line spacing and using the Spell Check function, are utilized to create assignment sheets, video graphics and press releases for a new televised weather program. Additionally, graphics and WorkArt are included in the design of reusable template files and the Internet is accessed to locate information about weather conditions around the world. |
Module Four: Spreadsheets (7 lessons) |
Spreadsheet technology is utilized to help increase a radio station’s revenue and profit. The basic tools of spreadsheets are introduced as data is entered and mathematical operations are performed. Charts are created and modified using a variety of tools to select chart types and to add legends. The resulting spreadsheet tables and charts are linked to wordprocessing documents. Additionally, HTML source code is explored and basic programming statements are constructed. |
Module Five: Multimedia (7 lessons) |
An interactive multimedia kiosk presentation is created that highlights different divisions of a large media company. This presentation includes text, graphics, sound and video files. Objects are animated, hot spots are added and transitions are included in the electronic slide show. Moreover, previously utilized skills, such as creating images with drawing tools, downloading graphics from the Internet, retrieving e-mail and taking a screen capture, are applied to design the presentation. |
Module One: Graphics (15 lessons) |
The bitmapped, object-oriented and 3-D rendering applications within CorelDRAW 8 are used to create electronic art representative of several artistic periods: The Early Years (graphics tablet fundamentals, color drawing tools, layering); Abstract Expressionism (text, shapes, special effects); The Blue Period (filters, advanced colors, bitmaps); and Avant Grade (3-D art). Finally, the work is assembled into a Web page retrospective. |
Module Two: Telecommunications (15 lessons) |
Professional Web page design is the focus of a new business venture. The first step involves market research, as existing Web sites are located and evaluated for structure and content. The acquired knowledge is then applied as a corporate home page and generated using Microsoft FrontPage 98 with sections detailing the company history, the product offerings, the consulting services and the inquiry response mechanisms. Ultimately, a client is identified and a site incorporated animation, sound applets, transitions and links is created and posted on the Internet. |
Module Three: Programming (15 lessons) |
Programming fundamentals are introduced through Visual Basic 5.0, which contains hundreds of statements, functions and keywords, many of which relate directly to the Windows GUI. The properties, methods and events of the integrated development environment are addressed, as is Visual Basic programming within the productivity applications contained in the Microsoft Office 97 Pro suite. |
